| It was one week
of ups and downs. The week for me started off on Sunday morning
with the "Shamrock Shuffle", an 8 k race (5 miles) through the streets
of Chicago. I had a good time (for me), I averaged 8 min. miles.
My struggle to remain in surf-shape continues and will continue forever.
My new motto is, "BE ALL YOU USED TO BE" !!
That night, I got my wife to take me to O'Hare airport with my dinged up (but virgin) 9' 10" Dewey Weber Performer. I bought the board in FL, but Federal Express put a fork-lift blade into the board's underside. I had arranged with Doc (our alt.surfing ding-master) to get it all fixed up. I arrived at Logan in Boston at about 1 AM, with my giant Performer. (hey, given the waves we had in Rhode island the other week, such a MUSHY small wave board would be justified) I hailed a van cab and got to my hotel by 2AM. (Gawd, as far as being able to hailing a cab, Boston is right up there with Des Moines!) The week sucked, work wise. I am being rolled off of this project in two weeks time. But after TAX DAY I am going to visit with Mama Sus, Neal and Bud in Honolulu! Then I'll surf another week in Maui. Jack Nordgren's friend Rex is shaping a board for me that will be waiting in Hawaii. After the trip I may be starting another 8 week project in Boston. At least I'll still get to surf on the weekends. I'll be back in Chicago to catch our "wave season" on the Lakes after that. |
Well, nobody knew my name, Norm wasn't there (he was surfing in L.A.) and the bar didn't even look like the set! The building was the same you see on TV, however! ![]()

Tony picked me up at 6:30AM and we loaded up the truck with all three boards. He brought the Robert August 9'2" for me, and for himself a Fish 7'10" also a Robert August board. We placed my giant Performer underneath the Fish on the truck's roof and we were off to Cape Cod! |
| We stopped at the Nauset
Surf shop, a pretty impressive little store. Tony got a board bag and I
bought myself a nice surf watch and some new 5 mm gloves for the up-coming
session. Tony has his eye on a 7'4" board, which he no doubt will
be purchasing for those up-coming Lake Michigan overhead tubes he will
be getting in Chicago (April Fools)!
Thereafter we dropped off my damaged board with Doc. Doc explained that he had fixed a whole shipment of Robert August boards with forklift wounds. I had a pressure ding and the gaping hole in the board's skin. We left Doc with the stick and headed for the nearby Coast Guard Beach. Doc shared with us some lore about surfing in Cape Cod during the '60's and '70's. It musta been pretty different back then. He told us of the giant waves he's had and how he doesn't bother with the small ones...(that are just right for me..waist to shoulder!) He showed us the new board he's bringing down for alt.surfing-palooza in Panama. Wish I were going, but I will be sure to get to Hatteras for Guido-Palooza 2000!

Doc after giving me "spider" eatin' instructions during my last Cape Cod trip. Some of my pics didn't turn out from this trip, sorry! |

I
was entranced by Coast Guard Beach. Down the way there used to be a house
in the 1700's called the "Way Out House", and an author wrote that one
could see all four corners of the world from that sandbar. Little lines
stretched all the way to the horizon and a few guys were out. We
we determined that the "sweet spots" (takeoffs were possible) were
occupied by locals, so we went down the beach and waited our turns.
Tony had some trouble being on the fish out there just because the waves were so small. But he got in a few cutbacks and rode down the line. I also had a few rides and took a few small drops on the Robert August. I am really liking that board the more I ride it. I think I'll get one soon. Our visitor in the lineup was a big seal. He swam over about thirty yards from us and just stared. Then he popped back under the water. He came back for another look at us in about twenty minutes. He never flinched. Tony told me that this is the seal mating season and they have been known to bite surfers on occasion. We were prepared to paddle in, if necessary. On the last wave of the session (which were declining in quality) we both took the same wave back into shore...my board's single fin dug into the sand at the end. Short and sweet ride.

| After
the session, we proceeded back to the car. Tony got a page, so we knew
we had to bolt back to Boston. In the meantime, Doc had fixed up my board
to perfection. He had repaired both dings beautifully and the compound
was dry enough to load the board for the trip back to Boston. THANKS SO
MUCH, DOC! Lunch and drinks at the Land 'Ho" on my next trip out!
We swapped a few more alt.surfing stories, and then Tony and I were off back to Boston. I was beat up from my daily runs, my work schedule, and the early trip out. I crashed as soon as I hit the truck. But we listened to Ozrick Tentacles, and I won't forget that eclectic ensemble any time soon! Once
again I hit the AA 5:55PM out of Logan back to ORD. I looked at my
digital pics on the way back. The dunes and spectacular coast remind me
of places on the Lakes that I love,
Thanks again, Tony and Doc! The trip made my week! |
